Understanding of YouTube Thumbnails & Correct Resolution Size

YouTube Thumbnail

As we know, YouTube is the most popular and most visited video sharing based social media site on the day. If we have a video uploaded on the YouTube.com site, our video will have a thumbnail. On the YouTube.com site page, if a video thumbnail is clicked on the meal will bring visitors to the video playback page.

Default YouTube Video Thumbnail

When we upload a video on the YouTube.com site, by default the YouTube site selects randomly three image capture (screenshoot) from our video to be made a thumbnail. We can choose one of them to be the thumbnail of our video. So basically we don’t have to make our own video thumbnails.

Suggested YouTube Video Thumbnail Size

The size of the video thumbnail image resolution recommended by the YouTube.com site is 1280 × 720 pixels.

Following are the thumbnail image specifications suggested by the YouTube.com site.

  • Aspect ratio: 16: 9
  • Resolution: 1280 x 720 pixels
  • Minimum width: 640 pixels
  • Image format: JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG
  • Maximum file size: 2MB

Function of Thumbnail Images on YouTube Videos

The video thumbnail on the YouTube site besides functioning as a link image also functions as a video cover. Before the video is played, what is displayed as the cover of our video is a thumbnail image.

The default thumbnail image provided by the YouTube.com site is often less than what we want or less attractive. Creating your own thumbnail images allows us to provide a better and more informative video cover. Of course we can add text at will to our thumbnail images.
